Pirate Party's Boston area School
Enrichment Programs usually include Captain
Cane's Pirate Treasure Hunt! as well as one or more
additional Educational Units. There is always instruction with
a globe and ship model and talk on maritime history. There is a
science element added with serious instruction in compass
navigation. Every child receives a sturdy magnetic compass and
is instructed on its use. The children use it repeatedly to navigate
to the treasure. And the children keep the
compasses.
Further Educational Units
may include any of the following:
The Story of Grace
O'Malley, Pirate Queen This
successful pirate from Ireland has many descendants, including at
least one of the same name, in the Boston area. She sailed in the
late 16th and early 17th century, and had castles as well as ships.
Her family still operates ferry ships between mainland Ireland and
Clare Island, her old home. She was a welcome visitor to the court
of Queen Elizabeth I.
The World of
Pirates This can be a one hour
powerpoint presentation and is presented on cruise ships by Captain
Cane to adults and children. The history of pirates from the
times of the ancient Greeks to the present, from all over the world,
is reviewed.
The Voyages of
Discovery of Captain Cook This can be a
one hour powerpoint presentation and is presented by Captain Cane
as maritime history aboard cruise ships. Cook made many
fascinating discoveries of people, places, plants, and animals. He
witnessed and recorded the transit of Venus across the sky in the
South Pacific in the late 1700s, and even had secret orders
from the Crown to search for what was known as Terra Australis
Incognito-- a fabled land in the South Seas which we now call
Australia.
All presentations include a wealth of
period illustrations and exhibits appropriate to the subject matter.
Other Educational Units include presentations on Lord Admiral Nelson, the famous
Captain Bligh, even Myths and Monsters of the Deep.
